Curriculum Night

On Thursday, 17th October, the annual curriculum night took place. The event gives the mantle to the pupils to convey the many facets of the IB programme to their parents. The Kindergarten kicked off proceedings by singing an array of songs explaining what and how they learn. Then the PYP students interactively presented the key concepts, learner profile attributes and ATL skills, amongst others, by way of mini workshops. The MYP Pupils continued in the same vein, inviting parents to take part in various curriculum related activities, allowing them to step into their children’s shoes.

4M Science Day – Volčji Potok Arboretum

The 4M students began their Thursday lesson in the Volčji Potok Arboretum, where they got to know what a herbarium is and how to make one. Afterwards, they followed the guide and collected leaves for their leaf collections. On the way back, the pupils walked through the dinosaur park and were amazed by the creatures that once existed.

An Amazing Concert – The Celebration of the Day of Danila Kumar

We celebrated the Day of Our School – the Day of Danila Kumar  with an amazing concert of a Slovenian acapella group, Jazzva, this Tuesday, 15th of October.

All present, children and adults, enjoyed a mosaic of Slovenian and international evergreen and contemporary pop and folk songs. The members of Jazzva confirmed they are top performers and musicians.

Bežigrad Elderly Home Visit

On Wednesday, 16th October 2019, fourteen students – volunteers from the International and National department of our school visited the Home for the Elderly in Bežigrad where we helped to prepare paper bags for the chestnut picnic. Our students showed a very respectful attitude towards the residents of the home contributing to a wonderful time together.

5M Science Day – The Solar System

On Tuesday, October 15, 5M had a Science Day. They were making models of the Solar System using scales. They learnt how to use different scales and why they are important. The pupils realised that it is quite difficult to make a good model of the Solar System because of the large numbers involved and the big differences between the planets. They did their best. At the end, the students presented their models in the hallway.

Kindergarten – French Pupils Visit

On Monday morning, 14th October, we had a very nice activity with the French students who visited our school. They were teaching our kindergarten pupils some French expressions and a number rhyme.

Slovene – French Exchange

On the evening of the 10th October a group of 30 French students from Challans came to visit our school, stay with our host families and learn about our school and our culture. On Friday they attended some lessons, had different workshops and got acquainted with Slovene culture. During the weekend they were with their families discovering Slovenia.

ACES Board Meeting and Members Conference in Budapest

Ms Irena Steblaj, Our Head, Ms Tadeja Galonja, our MYP coordinator and Ms Tina Fuerst, our PYP coordinator attended the ACES (Association of IB Central European Schools) October Members Conference. Our administration team was able to exchange ideas and met Ms Teri Walker from the IB office in the Hague who presented and discussed new IB Standards and Practices.
Our Head, Ms Steblaj is also the ACES Board member, responsible for the augmentation of Professional development ACES Cluster Workshops. Our school promotes and practices active cooperation with other ACES schools and we have had many joint activities and projects with the Matija Gubca International School from Zagreb, Croatia and the International School of Carinthia from Velden, Austria.

5M – Reading under the Trees

On Tuesday, 8th of October, 5M spent their UOI lesson in the sunny backyard. We did reading comprehension outside our classroom. The students enjoyed it because they had more privacy. We all agree that we should do this regularly.

1M Cultural Day – The School Museum

On Tuesday, 8th October,  we went to a museum that showed us what school was like in the past. We got to participate in a maths lesson that could have taken place 100 years ago. To do so, the boys got to dress up in vests and the girls got to wear dresses. We sat in rows with boys on one side and girls on the other side. We also got to see many exhibits in the museum from different schools in the past.

SINGING CAMP – KRANJSKA GORA

On the 4th and 5th October, some students went on a music camp in Kranjska Gora. Though challenging, our class schedule included time for rest and play. Each day the pupils attended singing, dancing, acting, crafts, outdoor activities, and more. It was a fun and relaxing weekend for our students. Besides musical activities, the pupils were able to do various sporting pursuits.

1M – Reading under the Treetops

On Friday, 27th September, 1M spent their English lesson outside reading or, better said, listening to a story connected to our unit of Inquiry. It was a change to being in the classroom, but we enjoyed it as it was sunny and we were in nature.

3M Cultural day

On Tuesday, October 1st, the pupils from 3M had a Cultural Day on the theme of their UoI about conflict, Can We Just Get Along. The students investigated how to deal with situations when conflicts arise, how to show empathy, and how to learn to compromise and come to a resolution.

4M – Reading Under the Trees

4m students enjoyed a part of a lesson reading in the school’s green playground. They continued reading books for their reading diary.

On Friday, 27th September, the 3M pupils took the chance to enjoy the dénouement of the summer by reading under the trees in the school grounds. The students read books about their current UoI, Conflict, while benefitting from the fresh air and being in nature.

The Day of Danila Kumar

Our school obtained its name from the young Slovenian resistance member, Danila Kumar, who lived in our school’s neighbourhood and was brutally killed in the Second World War. She was born on 13 October and that is why this day is the Day of Our School. To celebrate this event, we will organise a concert of a Slovenian acapella group, Jazzva, on Tuesday, 15 October, at 18.00 in the Smelt Auditorium, Dunajska 160. All members of our school community are welcome. The ticket costs 5€. When we receive the applications, we will give the tickets to students. Our school will send you the invoice by mail.

Music Camp Invitation

Dear parents,

I would like to ask you to encourage your children to join our PYP (Musical Stars) and MYP (Vocal Group) choir and Drum section. To promote these extracurricular activities, we will organise a music camp in Kranjska Gora on 4th and 5th October. This camp is free of charge for all students who will participate at the choirs and drums extracurricular activities in the school year 2019/20. Our mentors, Mr Simon Zoretič Gajser, Mr Andrew Tomlin (for drums) and Ms Tina Hauptman (for singing) and Kaja Ričnik (for dance) will organise a fun and relaxing weekend for our students. Besides musical activities, the pupils will be able to do various sporting pursuits. I would like to remind you that these kind of activities help with developing brain function and social skills and contribute to coping better with everyday challenges, as well as supporting the physical and mental health of children.

PYP Sports Day – GIB Centre

On 23rd September, the PYP had a sports day at the GIB centre. The centre is home to many gyms, incorporating trampolines, gymnastic equipment, and also one room dedicated to judo. The pupils took it in turns to try each athletic activity, and worked up quite a sweat by the end of the day’s energetic endeavours.
