Adapting to Slovenia

The 6m students have successfully completed their first unit at Language and literature. They learnt about how people adapt to new cultures and whether it is better to adapt or stick with your own culture and traditions. For their summative assessment, they had to write a blog post or a leaflet that would provide tips for students new to our school and Slovenia. You are welcome to read their blog posts (Alina, Din, Gala, Iuliana, Kaja, Mishel, Princesa, Stefi) while their leaflets are posted on our school walls.

They tested their throwing techniques in Judo, jumping prowess on the trampoline, balance, strength and skill in gymnastics, and agility in ball games. Thanks to the guys at GIB for an energising and fun day out.

Kindergarten Cultural Day

On Friday 2 December our kindergarten students visited “Kinoteka” where they saw eight animated movies. We heard a lot of laughing in the dark, so we know they enjoyed the films immensely. It was also nice on the bus ride there and back as they were observing Christmas trees in front of different buildings.

Year 8 Shakespearian Sonnet Recital Morning

The Curtains were drawn, the stage was set (metaphorically speaking) for the long awaited recitations at Year 8’s Shakespearian Sonnet Recital Morning. After an arduous month of wrestling with rhyme scheme, metaphor, and Iambic pentameter, to name but a few, the students braved their nerves to deliver the lines they had painstakingly prepared for the Unit on Shakespeare, and of course, the highly emotive subject of love. We were taken on wonderous trains to the ocean, experienced the changeable bliss of the seasons, learnt of family love, the affection for one’s city, and the thrill, danger and loss of Formula one. Amongst the impassioned highs and lows, I’m sure even Shakespeare himself would have been moved by the aesthetic & technical perfection of the sonnets, as, indeed, were the students’ teachers, Headmaster, and all in attendance.
Bravo!

3M Sports Day – Orienteering

Traditional Slovenian Breakfast

On 18 November we commemorated the day of Slovenian food and of the Slovenian traditional breakfast. For this reason all students in Slovenia received bread, butter, honey, Milk and an Apple. This event helps us increase awareness about local food for our health and the protection of local production and the environment. The students wolfed it down, nothing better than buttered bread!

On Friday 18th November we went to visit The House of Experiments. After the bus ride to the city centre, we had a short stroll to reach our destination. Upon arrival friendly staff greeted us and we immediately went to explore. And in no time, it was our time to say goodbye and go back to school.
Time really flies when you are having fun.

1M – Halloween

This week, it was apparent that something exciting was happening on Wednesday. Instead of students, many witches, skeletons, vampires, mummies, spiders, and other scary creatures attended school. Students prepared for the Halloween party the week before and created various arts and crafts; our sewing circle made Trick or Treat bags. Also, the parents and PTA put immense effort into decorating the classrooms, including Piñatas, not to mention the fantastic Halloween party packed with games, food, and fun. “Trick or Treat” resonated through the school hallways, dome, and auditorium.

The 26th Ljubljana Marathon

This weekend saw the 26th running (pun unintended) of the Ljubljana Marathon, with the Saturday devoted to shorter promotional races for younger athletes. The race distances were 600, 1350 and 1800 metres, for 1st and 2nd, 3rd to 5th, and 6th to 9th grades respectively. The keen runners braved the unpredictable weather conditions and all gave strong and determined performances to delight the assembled crowd, their very proud, happy parents, and the Headmistress too.

1M Cultural Day – Slovenian School Museum

On Tuesday, October 18th, Grade 1 students visited the Slovenian School Museum. They got to see and experience what school was like more than 100 years ago. At first they put on old, but neat, clothes and then attended a lesson led by a very strict teacher. The students were very well behaved and there were no problems, they also received compliments from the teacher. However they were able to try what it was like to kneel on the corn as one of the punishments mentioned. The students enjoyed playing the part of students from the past, but all of them admitted that they prefer their school.

Kindergarten ZOO Visit

On Wednesday October 12th Kindergarten students visited the Ljubljana Zoo. They had a lot of fun observing lions, giraffes, tigers and even snakes. The most fun was had when the sealions were being fed. They were quite loud and funny. Since there was still some time left before the bus ride back to school, the teachers let the kids play in the playground, which was the best.
