8M – Drama Spectacle

It was a Drama spectacle for 8m on Wednesday, 25 May. They performed three myths/legends from different cultural backgrounds. Their interpretation was up to their imagination and artistic expression. We saw different styles and genres.
Students were applauded by an enthusiastic and utterly entertained audience. The room was packed, and we were delighted so many showed up. Well done, 8m!

WSC Koper

Some of our students participated in the World Scholar’s Cup – Regional Round in Koper last weekend. This year’s topic was A World Re-Renewed, and the students were practising and studying to participate in various disciplines and subjects. They had to demonstrate excellent debating and writing skills as well as be very knowledgeable about Science & Technology, Social Studies, History, Art & Music, Literature & Media and the Special Area in the Scholar’s Bowl and Scholar’s Challenge. They also had to present excellent collaborative skills because they had to work in teams of three. Cooking with herbs

The surrounding blooming nature offers a lot of different herbs at this time of the year. We checked our school garden and found many to put into egg omelettes and made some lovely refreshing mint tea.

5M Morning with Andreja Jernejčič

5M were treated to an invitiation from the prominent expert in public speaking, Andreja Jernejčič. Upon arrival, at her beautiful premises in Ljubljana, we were welcomed with beverages and appetizers, to prepare us for learning about performing in front of an audience. First, Ms Jernejčič gave a richly informative presentation about public speaking, noting non-verbal communication, preparation, and knowledge as some key aspects. There was also the trick of trying to talk with a pencil in your mouth, which helps you open your mouth fully. The students then practiced, using their newly acquired knowledge, and performed, in front of camera, their opening lines for their PYP Exhibition speeches. The teachers were also put on the spot and asked to speak. Ms Jernejčič, then gave us the benefit of her insightful feedback, which was very encouraging for the students, and the teachers too. We would like to thank Ms Jernejčič for a warm, wonderful and informative morning, as well as for the goodie bag! Thank you!

1M – Green Fingers

Part of the current unit of 1m students is taking care of plants and showing some action and responsibility for them. So far, we are helping take care of part of the vegetable and herb garden on our green playground. Last week students also put some effort into a flower garden next to our school building. We want to thank MYP students for removing the old plants and weeds and doing what was too complicated for us, so we could plant some flowers. We like to show our green fingers and are happy with the results of our hard work.

World Bee Day – 20 May

Did you know that the Slovene Beekeeping Association started World Bee Day?  And did you know that we have a beehive at our school?
Bees are the most important pollinators on our planet; without them, we would all starve in some time.
So, we also take care of bees at our school; we plant flowers and plants all around the school.
Ms Maja and Ms Katarina

5M Field Trip, Kavka – Day 5

The final day brought with it the realistaion that our Kavka adventure was coming to an end, but before it did, we still had things to see and explore. First, we went to visit a fish farm full of Marble trout, a native of the Soča river, some other breeds of fish, and told about the importance of the farm for nature. Then, a short tour of Kobarid was in order, which included the towering statue of Simon Gregorčič, a renowned Slovene poet from Kobarid, that dominates the town’s square. The journey back to Ljubljana was pleasant and relaxing, and the students and parents were happy to be reunited again. And if you would like to witness some of the sights and vistas we were treated to this week, Stage 19 of the Giro d’Italia will pass right past where we stayed, and will be broadcast on TV next Friday, 27th May.

MYP – Science Day – Koper

On Wednesday, 18 May, all the MYP students visited the Port of Koper and the Škocjanska gulf nature reserve. At the Port of Koper, we learned how the port functions and how vital sea trade is for local and international business. At the Škocjanska gulf, students were able to go for a short hike with a guide, observing the natural wildlife and learning about the importance of preserving fragile natural habitats.

K1 & 2 – Cycling Day

We had an amazing day on Wednesday, 18 May. We spent the whole morning on our bicycles and scooters. The teachers prepared a fun and challenging obstacle course for us, where we tested our handling abilities. In the end, all of us got diplomas for being great cyclists 🙂

PYP – Sports Day

It was a lovely sunny day for the PYP Sports Day on Wednesday, 18 May. The students enjoyed various hikes, and the weather couldn’t have been more in our favour. Grades 1 and 2 students went on a hike to Saint Jakob, and grades 3 and 4 to Saint Miklavž above the Sava river. We all had a great time observing nature and the beautiful views.

5M Field Trip, Kavka – Day 4

Day 4 started with morning gym, and another 4 lessons of the PYP project, with presentations of speeches. After lunch, the students chanced their arm at scaling the heights of Dom Kavka’s climbing wall, with much success. And in the evening the last night came to a fitting finale with many activities created by the visiting schools, including, a quiz testing us on prekmurian vocabulary, a word association game, questions revealing who the lucky contestants would be to go on a blind date, and, with the highlight being the dance, in which everyone partied and reveled to regional music classics.

5M Field Trip, Kavka – Day 3

A breezy start met us today, as a morning session working on the PYP Exhibition awaited, perfecting opening speeches and such like. Then a splendid birthday surprise was in store for one lucky student who was treated to lashings of Birthday cake, as were the other students and the teachers too! The afternoon brought the chance to test their skills with the bow and arrow and become archers for a few hours. And to wind down the day the students were given the opportunity to sit back and relax a little with the film night feature – The Secret Life of Pets 2.

5M Field Trip, Kavka – Day 2

The sun greeted us on Day 2, and after breakfast we prepared for a hike to the Kolovrat outdoor museum. On the way we ascended the Kolovrat ridge, and walked a section of the walk of peace, bestriding the Italian – Slovene border. Amidst the luscious landscape we were reminded of the harsh environment soldiers from WWI endured in the bunkers and tunnels of the Italian Army’s third line of defense. When we returned to our resting place, the students were very proud to learn that all in all they had covered 9 kilometers. The PYP exhibition took centre stage in the afternoon with 3 hours on the bounce. Then, following dinner, to conclude the evening, the pupils designed comic strips with a variety of wacky and wild onomatopoeic words.

5M Field Trip, Kavka – Day 1

After a, happily, uneventful coach journey through a sun soaked Slovenia, we finally arrived in the serene mountain top surroundings of CSOD Kavka. When settling-in and lunch were dealt with, a guided tour of kavka cave was on the agenda. The students descended the rocky floor of the cave and discovered many hidden secrets within. Then work: the PYP exhibition, with a break for dinner, and a call to the parents in between. And to close the day, shower and then bed.

MYP – Scavenger Hunt & Ljubljana Castle

The Language acquisition team organised a collapsed day for the MYP students during which they got to know our capital city, Ljubljana. In the first part of the day, students were divided into smaller groups, and they were exploring the sights around the centre of Ljubljana. They received a list of clues written in the languages they have learned at our school (Slovenian, German, French, Spanish) which helped them find the sights and do the accompanying tasks like singing, writing poetry, drawing… In the second part of the day, the students ascended to the top of Grajski grič to enter a time machine. They travelled back in time to visit Ljubljana in different periods in time like the Antiquity, Middle Ages, Napoleon’s time… when the official language was not Slovenian but German or French. They learned many interesting facts about Ljubljana and have come up with questions for a quiz that will test your knowledge about Ljubljana. Click here to begin the quiz.

PYP – House of Illusions

On Monday and Tuesday, 25 and 26 April, students of PYP (grades 1 – 5), had a collapsed day, during which they visited the House of Illusions in Ljubljana. They explored if people can really trust their senses and learn how to trick their brains. They went through the Upside-down room, the Vortex tunnel and experienced different optical illusions. It was a productive day, filled with new experiences, fun memories and great pictures.

PYP Science Day – “Earth Day”

On Friday 22 April, students of PYP Grade 1 – Grade 5, had a science day, which theme was celebrating EARTH DAY. They explored how to REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE waste. It was a productive day that ended not only with new knowledge and findings but also with the cleanest lockers, classrooms and hallway ever.
