Kindergarten – Shadow & Light Workshops
On Friday, 21 April, we took part in Shadow and Light Workshops in Cukrarna. We had great fun and the children were able to do a lot of interesting experiments.

World Scholar’s Cup
Five Danila Kumar International School students participated in the regional round of the World Scholar’s Cup competition, in Koper, during the weekend. The students had to show their knowledge on different topics and subjects connected to the main theme of the competition, this year being Reconstructing the Past. They had to display their excellent debating and writing skills, but the most important part of the competition was team-work and collaboration. The pupils achieved the following results: Maks, 6M, gained second place individually in the Scholar’s Challenge and Lalitha, 7M, gained seventh place individually in Collaborative Writing. Maks and Sonja, 7M, won a silver medal for debating and Eva, Lalitha and Eden, 7M won the gold medal in debating. The students had fun and we are very proud of them.

Earth Day

Today is Earth Day. A day set up over 50 years ago to help raise awareness about the health and welfare of planet Earth. There are many things we can do, both collectively and individuals, to protect and sustain the planet so it can stay alive and thrive in the years to come, and to the benefit of every living thing that calls the planet home. Alpe Adria Soccer Tournament
Some of our students participated in the Alpe Adria soccer tournament in Udine, Italy. We had one girls team and two boys teams. The matches were very competitive, but played following the principles of sportsmanship. Along with the photos below, you can also click here for some more action from the tournament.
Kuhnapato
On 19 April between 10:00 and 12:00 noon, four students from 5m cooked buckwheat and asparagus risotto in the City Park Spar.
The event was organised by the renowned cooking project Kuhnapato, which aims to promote cooking skills among the young and show how to prepare local and seasonal dishes which are best for the body and the environment.
The event also commemorates the official day of food zero-waste cooking (24 April).
The students created an excellent dish (the visitors to the stall munched it up!) and learnt a lot about the challenges of chefs and teamwork in restaurants.

Environmental Camp – CŠOD Cerkno
The students also tested their manual skills and took up challenges such as building a Da Vinci Bridge, building a polygon for a ball, and experimenting with water. They also built a camp in the forest and were very persistent in lighting the fire without matches.
Spring Kros
Today, the annual Spring Kros, a cross country running event, was held in Tivoli Park, Ljubljana. In the mild April air, under intermittently cloudy and sunny skies, the young runners exerted themselves on the glistening green Tivoli plains to the cheers and encouragement of the gathered spectators.
Invitation to The 7th LIKfest Exhibition

7M Cultural Day – Storytelling
The students of 7m visited Vodnikova Domačija for today’s cultural day. There, they had a storytelling workshop, learning about the tricks of talking and performing, using different props. They worked in groups presenting improvised stories.

Bežigrad Elderly Home Visit
The 6M students visited the Home for the Elderly in Bežigrad once again. The students showed that they were balanced and caring by preparing some easy workout activities for the residents with disabilities. Both the students and the residents had fun and enjoyed each other’s company.

Planica
On Thursday, 30 March, some of the best performing MYP students were given the opportunity to experience one of Slovenia’s most iconic sporting venues – Planica. The world famous ski flying complex holds the end of season world cup ski jump competition, and Thursday is the day of the qualification rounds, for which schools are invited to witness the action. The crowd enthusiastically roared on the home competitors and were awarded with a Slovenian one-two.

Today, our grade 2 students were inquiring through different activities about their heart and components of health. They measured their heart beats and found out how the heart beat changes in different activities and which exercises can help to improve the various components of health (cardio, muscle strength, muscle endurance and flexibility).

First LEGO League Tournament
On Saturday, 18th March, our mixed school team, Dominant Owls, took part in the FIRST LEGO League Adia FINALS – watch the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQh2trj0YB
FIRST LEGO League is the most accessible, guided global robotics competition, helping students and teachers to build a better future together. The teams are competing in four categories: the robot game, the technical interview, the project and core values. Our team, comprised from national (Nejc Tušek, and Miha Aleksander Folkson) and international (Maria Madeleine Svetlana Magnus, Eden Kismet Bahri and Eva Kastelic) department students, were successful at demonstrating all four components, on which they have been working hard for the past six months. As a result, they came in 16th position in the Adria region and received a SILVER AWARD.

Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day is a day set aside to express love, respect and thanks to mothers. The day is observed by giving gifts, visiting, or taking mothers out for dinner and celebrations. Mother’s Day around the world falls on different dates at various times of the year (usually in March or May). In Slovenia it is celebrated on 25 March. Many cultures have diverse ways to celebrate it. The moral of this day is that husbands and children must respect their wives and mothers in the family. President Woodrow Wilson announced the first Mother’s Day in the USA on 9 May 1914. He asked Americans to give a public “thank you” to their mothers and all mothers on that day. What will you do on Mother’s Day?

International Women’s Day
To commemorate International Women’s Day, the year 8 students had a lesson dedicated to the holiday. They created acrostic poems about women they admire, researched women leaders from around the world, imagined a day in the life of a girl from another place or time, amongst other things. International Women’s Day reminds us to be open-minded and caring, to live in a world in which everyone is equal.
6M – Visit to the Home for the Elderly
Some 6M students visited the Home for the Elderly in Bežigrad once more. The students again showed that they were excellent communicators, caring and real risk-takers. They prepared the delicious Kaiserschmarrn together with the residents of the home, which they also got to enjoy later on. Both the students and the hosts had fun and enjoyed each other’s company.

3M Science Day – Bridges must Cross & Carry
On 7 March, the 3M students had a science day in which they investigated the purpose and strength of the different types of structures and materials of bridges. In groups, through discussion and trial and error they executed and constructed their own bridges and evaluated their designs, materials used, and building techniques employed by carrying out various experiments to test the worthiness, endurance and fortitude of their work.
