4M Cultural Day – Ancient Ljubljana

Over the weekend, the 4M pupils participated in a cultural day. Those abroad were able to get to know ancient Ljubljana through animations and videos. Those in Ljubljana went on a tour that led them around the city. The pupils began their journey at Kongresni trg, where they got to know the Emonec statue. The next stop was the crossroads of Slovenska and Rimska street, where the Roman forum stood years ago. Then, they proceeded to Aškerčeva street where they were able to find out what kloaka is and what its purpose was. The pupils then visited the Roman wall.

Important Information for the Return to School

Dear parents,

More students have returned to school today. As we have had regular online programmes since 18 March, the pupils are well on track and they will complete all the required tasks, without any problems, by the end of the school year.

Our staff is well prepared and procedures and protocols have been put in place to ensure a safe environment for all.

The danger of the virus is still not over, thus, responsible behaviour and the adherence to the safety routines remain of paramount importance.

Furthermore, please do not send your children to school if they are ill and inform us if there is any suspicion of infection.

Please be aware that all our students have lessons according to our regular timetable from today on.

Service Project Presentations

Our Service project journey for MYP 1 and MYP 2 has successfully concluded for this school year. The pupils went through a long process of investigating and addressing the needs of different communities through service action. They needed to address their service actions through the lens of the main theme: “Be part of the solution, not the pollution”.

To conclude their actions and defined goals they listened to the presentation of Dr Katarina Polajnar Horvat, a researcher at ZRCSAZU Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Science and Arts, about how to raise environmental awareness and behaviour, through visuals such us comic strips.

The pupils were very creative, and this school year presented their work through visual representations.

I would like to congratulate the pupils and their mentors for their dedication, hard work and flexibility.

New Rules & Routines for School

Dear parents,

We have been informed about the new rules and routines for next week, when all our students will return to school. The safety distance of 1.5 m in classrooms and generally on school grounds is not required anymore, but we will continue to try to adhere to it as our classes are not so big.

Pupils should wait in their groups, regarding the safety distance from other groups/classes, for their teachers to take them to their classes in the playground area entrance through the garden gate,

the little garden to the left on the path to the main entrance (photo), according to this schedule every day:

08:00: Kindergarten
08:05: 4M, 5M, 7I & 7M
08:10: 3M & 1M, 6M
08:15: 2M, 8M & 8I

Please do not be late, as there will be a special protocol to enter the school. In case your child is late, call this number 051728759 and a teacher will come and take your child to their classroom.

Parents and other adults are not allowed to enter the school building. If you need any documents or you have any issues contact our office or receptionist.

Only healthy students can come to school.

The lessons will be organised according to our regular timetables for all grades, you can find them on our webpage:  http://en.os-danilekumar.si/students/

There will be no extracurricular activities or extra programmes unless we inform you otherwise.

If your PYP child/ren is/are not in the Afternoon Programme, you must pick them up from the same area as where you leave them to enter the school, immediately after their last lesson. All PYP students will have lunch during school time in their classrooms.

The kindergarten and Afternoon Programme will take place until 16:00. Parents will be able to page their children from the main entrance waiting area.

For the pupils who stay at home, we will continue to send some materials and tasks once a week. We expect students to complete their work and send it to their teachers in the PYP or post it on OneNote in the MYP. Our teachers will not be able to give them feedback regularly, but they will assess them when deciphering their final grade.

If necessary, we will call your child to school to do summative assessment tasks. These pupils’ parents will get an e-mail about testing from me.

Please let us know if your child is not returning to school. We also need to know if your child will attend the Afternoon programme and have meals in school.

If you want your child (grades 1-5) to attend the Afternoon Programme and have meals, please complete the attached form (here) and send it back to us as soon as possible, the latest by 07:00, on Monday, 1 June.

Please let us know if any of the students who have been at home until today, from K1, K2, grades 1-3 and grades 8, will return to school.

The Return to School

Dear parents,

You have probably already learnt through the media that all pupils will return to school next week: grades 4 & 5 on Monday, 1 June, and grades 6 & 7 on Wednesday, 3 June.

I still have to discuss the logistical procedures and timetables with our administration and staff.

I will send you more information and detailed instructions for next week later today.

Kind regards,

Irena Šteblaj

4M Art

The pupils of 4M have been developing their own transport vehicles, iwith the central idea of unit 5 in mind: ‘Transportation systems around the world affect our lives in different ways.’
The vehicles are made of paper and the pupil’s art skills and imagination!

Adjusting to New School Life

Dear parents,

In addition to our K1 to grade 3 pupils, who have adjusted to the “new” school life really well, our grade 8 students, who arrived at school on Monday with an air of reluctance and sleepiness, are back in gear and working very diligently and responsibly.

I was very happy and proud yesterday when I heard numerous comments from teachers, kitchen and cleaning staff who commended the responsible behaviour and discipline of our pupils.

We look forward to welcoming back to school all the pupils who are still at home, soon.

A Message Regarding Grade 8 Pupils Staying at Home

Dear pupils and parents,

Grade 8 pupils started attending lessons in school this week, thus, the online learning process for them ceased on Monday.

These are the instructions for all who stay at home:

  1. Our teachers will post the learning materials on OneNote once a week. It is your duty to check OneNote regularly as they will not do it according to your regular timetable. The teachers have lessons in school according to a new timetable and they also have to continue with the online teaching for grades 6 and 7, so they are very busy and these programmes are their priority. They are not available for grade 8 online learning anymore.
  2. Do your schoolwork regularly. The teachers will not give you feedback, but they will check your work, and it may influence your final grade.
  3. We will inform you if you have to come to school to do summative assessment activities to improve your grades.
  4. There will be no online summative assessment. Be aware that If you do not come to do the assessment in school you will miss your opportunity to improve your grade.
  5. The school will organise separate classrooms for these assessments.
  6. Information about tests and other assessment activities in school for your class will be posted in the Teams calendar.

A Clarification Of Rules & Procedures

Dear parents,

On Monday we started the second week of programmes in school for certain grades and some individual pupils in need of extra help.

The parents of pupils who are learning in school received detailed instructions and information about the procedures, by email, before their children returned to school.

Our staff have been putting great effort and time into ensuring safe routines and conditions. We have additional teachers and staff on duty along with administrative personel helping with the organisation and supervision of pupils during arrival, departure, snack and lunch time, during which special safety procedures and rules are in place.

I received a message with some concerns about the safety measures for meals and a lack of sanitisers in school. Our pupils and staff must wash their hands with special soap containing sanitiser, we have additional sanitisers for hands and surfaces in classrooms and around the school. Our staff and pupils must follow the protocols for snack and lunch and we have been supervising all meals.

Below, are the rules for pupils which the parents received before their children returned to school (our staff have an additional set of rules and routines we must follow – snack, lunck, arrival, departure procedures).

Final Grades & Report Cards

Dear parents,

There are only three weeks until the end of the school year for grade 8 students and four weeks for other grades. The pupils and teachers are wrapping up activities and various projects. In addition to formative assessment, which has been an ongoing process from the beginning of the school year, at the end of each unit and also at the end of the school year, some summative assessment tasks and projects will also have to be completed by our pupils.

This school year has been very unusual and also exhausting for some of our students. They need more support from all of us in order to be more effective and finish the school year with good results, and be happy with their report cards.

We have already appointed specific teachers who help individual students, and have organised extra lessons in school for the pupils who still do online learning and have difficulties coping with their work.

I would like to ask parents to help their children manage their school work better by ensuring a stimulative learning environment, a lot of sleep, exercise, and healthy nutrition along with well organised working/learning procedures and routines.

Kind regards,

Irena Šteblaj

Grade 8 Return to School

Dear parents,

The grade 8 pupils are returning to school today. They will be joining our kindergarten and grade 1 – 3 students, who have successfully finished their first week in school after being at home for two months.

Although they have had to follow the safety measures, they have been enjoying school life again.

We hope this week we will learn if the rest of our students will be able to return to school, too.

I look forward to seeing all of our students back at school soon.

Best wishes,

Irena Šteblaj

Community Project Presentations

Our MYP 3 classes have completed yet another milestone in their school year, the Community Project Presentations on May 18th and 19th, respectively. The audience and the mentors were extremely proud of their commitment, the quality of presentations and the contribution in our lively online debate. Despite having the presentations in a never-before held form, via a Teams meeting, everything went smoothly and we had two very successful collapsed days. I would like to congratulate all presenters and their mentors and thank them for their flexibility, professionalism and a true exhibition of IB learner profiles. Well done!
Ms Mateja Kores,
Community Project coordinator

Reading Badges

Dear parents,

At the end of May the Reading Badges process will finish. The deadline to finish reading books and reporting by is 31 May. We are also preparing schedules and safe procedures for returning school books to our library. We will keep you posted.

2M Science Day – Ecosystems

On the second day of their return to school, the 2nd grade had a science day on ecosystems in which they explored habitats. They then created mobiles related to their research.

1M Science Day – Plants

After coming back to school, the first graders already spent the second day focusing on science concepts. The pupils were as busy as bees investigating and trying to find answers to questions like: Why are plants important? What are they used for? What is pollination? What is pollen? And who are pollinators? They created some posters in which they recorded their findings. They also learnt about World Bees Day and recreated some Slovenian traditional beehives.

Kindergarten Cultural Day

During their last week of online learning, the kindergarten pupils took part in a cultural day. They learnt a lot about theatre. They also watched the puppet show I Want my Hat Back and made puppets. Some of them also set up their own puppet shows.
